The Inland Sea, SETOUCHI Tourism Authority
The town of Kawajiri in Kure City is home to the traditional craft of Kawajiri fude brush-making.
Experience the full process at Hata Bunshindou, where they have been creating these prized brushes since 1930. Strictly adhering to traditional brush-making techniques, each one they create is crafted by a single artisan from start to finish, without using machines.
By making each brush by hand, they maintain a high standard of quality, much prized by calligraphers and Japanese-style painters, who have very precise needs for their art.
Under the guidance of young craftsmen, visitors will learn the basics of brush making. See what kind of tools are used, the steps to making a brush, and the differences in the finished product depending on whether they use old or new raw materials.
