One night every year in late October, Japanese monsters appear around Kakegawa Castle for the Kakegawa Hyakki Yako, a Halloween costume event. On this night the city of Kakegawa, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, welcomes visitors in costume. The main attraction is the large procession of people dressed as monsters marching around Kakegawa Castle. Please join us! This night only, you can pose for photos next to cultural attractions such as Kakegawa Castle and the old private house Takenomaru. There are food trucks and stalls, so you can enjoy a real Japanese festival.

Also on this night, the Yokai Shopping Street, full of stores where mysterious monsters lurk, appears between JR Kakegawa Station and Kakegawa Castle. There are shops where yokai monsters in costume are welcome. In the evening, when the monsters fill the streets, the shopping street becomes a museum, a spot where anyone can take photos alongside monster-like artwork! Look for the stores with the blue lantern. It's fun to dress up as a monster, but not required! Looking around is just as fun. Kakegawa Hyakki Yako is a rare, Japanese-style Halloween event. Entry is free.

How to get there

Take the Tokaido Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo Station to JR Kakegawa Station, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Kakegawa Castle is an 8-minute walk from the north exit of Kakegawa Station.
