Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki City
Offering fresh seafood such as Shimonoseki's specialty fugu (blowfish), the Karato Fish Market is a favorite destination not only for food professionals inside and outside the city, but also general consumers.
The best time to visit is weekends and public holidays during Iki-iki Bakangai, when the seafood stalls lined up in the market offer visitors a chance to try tasty sushi and other local delicacies, such as seafood bowls, fugu miso soup, fried jumbo shrimps, and fried angler fish. The menus here are all fresh, hearty, and reasonably priced, as they are offered by wholesalers. Recently, vending machines for blowfish dishes have also appeared, quickly becoming a hot topic among tourists.
Located next to the Karato Market is Kamon Wharf, a seaside shopping mall with restaurants serving fresh seafood specialties and souvenir shops selling local products. The boardwalk behind the mall is a nice spot to take a stroll and enjoy a panoramic view of the Kanmon Straits. Feel the atmosphere of the port city by looking at the Kanmon Bridge and the ships passing by, as you enjoy the refreshing sea breeze on the wooden deck.
From the JR Shin-Shimonoseki Station (San'yo Shinkansen Line), take a 20-minute bus ride to Karato. The market is a 3-minute walk from Karato.
