Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture is known around Japan for its important oyster farming areas on Oshima Island and the Karakuwa Peninsula. Both areas are surrounded by mountains with lush forests and rivers that transport important nutrients to the sea below, which is the secret to what makes the local oysters taste so fresh and rich.

This tour along the Karakuwa Peninsula allows visitors to board the boats of local oyster fishermen and experience how these shellfish are cultivated, as well as the fishermen’s care and commitment to their craft.
After an explanation from the fishermen, board the boat and head out to sea to check out the aquaculture rafts for about 40 minutes. If you are lucky, you may see some seagulls and can enjoy feeding them and watching their antics.

Once you return to shore, it is time to visit Banya Oyster Hut to savor huge freshly caught seasonal oysters and scallops that have been steamed to perfection. You can also mingle with the local staff and take in the views of Karakuwa’s inland bay right outside the window.

(In case of stormy weather, the boating portion may be omitted for safety reasons.)
