Discover rare birds on Tokyo’s far-flung islands
The Izu Islands, a string of volcanic islands accessible from Tokyo, are home to rare bird species not found on the mainland. The islands’ isolation and mild climate has allowed unique wildlife to flourish, with Miyakejima in particular being known as a bird sanctuary. Birds watchers can delight in spotting many rare birds including endemic species like the Akakokko (Izu thrush), and other endangered species. The warm seas around the islands also make the area a popular destination for scuba diving and swimming with dolphins.
