Sweeping views and sacred peaks

While the ornate temples of Nikko draw visitors to their magnificent grounds, there are other more natural wonders in the area. Just north of the city, Kirifuri Highland offers breathtaking views over Kanto , as far as Tokyo and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day. The area is renowned for its wildflowers and offers hiking and climbing routes for all levels.

How to Get There

Kirifuri Highland is accessible via a 25-minute bus ride from JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station.

Take the bus going towards Ozasa Farm and get off at Kirifuri Kogen bus stop.

Summer and fall are the most popular season to visit Kirifuri Highland. In June and July, the area is carpeted with yellow Nikko lilies, and the ski lifts take you over the golden fields. Fall brings about a stunning landscape of red, yellow, and orange.

1,445 steps into the sky

The Tenku Kairo, or Sky Corridor, is a 1,445 step staircase that ends with a panoramic view of the area. From the top, on clear days, Mt. Fuji and even the Pacific ocean are visible.

Climb towards a sacred peak

Kirifuri Highland acts as a gateway to one of Nikko's three sacred peaks, Mt. Nyoho. After ascending the Sky Corridor staircase, follow the path towards Mt. Akanagi which will lead you to another path towards Mt. Nyoho. Mt. Nyoho is the large ridge that rises over the famous Nikko shrines and temples. The climb is not easy and should not be attempted by beginners. However, Mt. Nyoho is revered as having the best views in Tochigi .
