Stairway to heaven

See dry stone walls that support row upon row of two-meter-wide fields, stacking up to the skies at impressive 45-degree angles. The Yusumizugaura Terraced Fields are true marvels of human resourcefulness.

Don't Miss

  • Standing in awe of the area's agricultural ingenuity
  • Stunning views of the Uwa Sea in the distance
  • Tasting an abundance of locally produced food

How to Get There

You can access the area by bus, car, or train.

Yusumizugaura Terraced Fields are a 40-minute drive from Uwajima . Leave half a day for this trip, then perhaps go on to the Ainan area to enjoy water sports or whale watching.

The easiest option is to rent a car from Matsuyama . It takes two hours to get to Yusumizugaura; the coastline makes for a gorgeous drive. You can then enjoy other local spots such as Nametoko Gorge.

Trains also serve Uwajima . From JR Matsuyama Station, take the Uwakai Limited Express and get off at JR Uwajima Station (1 hour 20 minutes). There are some car rental companies around the station where you can rent a car to visit the terraced fields.

Stunning vistas

The terraces line the coast of the sparkling waters of the Uwa Sea. Watch fishing boats bob along the horizon as you walk around the terraces. The jagged coastline, blue waters, and in spring, the green leaves of the potato plants, combine to make one of Ehime's most photogenic spots.

Straight from the ocean and fields

In an area with so much fresh produce, you should take advantage of it. At Dandanjaya cafe at the base of the terrace, you can do just this. Try the sea bream dishes, the pride and joy of the local waters, or hot buttered potatoes fresh from the terraces. Drive for 20 minutes to the nearby Doi Pearl Company to find naturally and painstakingly cultivated pearls to take home as a souvenir. Tours are available, so you can learn in detail about the processes used.
