An educational center about the natural environment of the Three Mountains of Dewa
The Mount Gassan Visitor Center educates guests on the natural environments of Mount Gassan, Mount Haguro, and Mount Yudono, which are revered in the Shinto religion as the Three Mountains of Dewa. The visitor center staff offer advice on recommended trails and sightseeing around these mountains.
The main space houses field maps, exhibits on the Bandai-Asahi National Park's ecosystems and local plants and animals that can be found on the trails, a 3D topographical diorama of the area, and aerial photos that give you a bird's eye perspective of the park. On days with good weather, the visitor center opens up a terrace where you can take a break and plan your next stop or hiking route.
You can stroll along a wheelchair-accessible nature observation path across the road from the visitor center. The path goes around a pond and through a wetlands botanical garden, taking about 30 minutes to complete.
The visitor center hosts seasonal outdoor events, including bird watching, nature observation parties, snowshoe trekking courses, and guided tours along the area's wooden boardwalks. The center offers hands-on experiences like workshops on basic carpentry, handmade soba, natural dyeing and paper-making using wild grass. Programs may charge fees to cover the cost of materials.
