A base for exploring the Kamikochi Highland Valley and the Northern Japanese Alps
Learn about the flora, fauna, and trails of the remote, mountainous Kamikochi Highland Valley at the Kamokochi Information Center.
The main building features educational exhibits on the natural environment of Kamikochi throughout the seasons and a topographical diorama of mountains in the area, such as the Hotaka mountain range. There are touch panel devices where you can learn more about the natural history of Kamikochi and how to identify plants and animals you might see on the trails.
The staff can give you up-to-date information on the hiking trails in the area and the conditions on the peaks of the Northern Japanese Alps. Several hiking trails leading up to some of Japan's highest peaks start near the Kamikochi Information Center.
There are amenities for hikers at the center, such as benches where you can rest or eat, and shower rooms that you can use for a small fee. Other facilities nearby include a souvenir shop, a cafeteria, a post office, an area to store your luggage, and a tourist desk to help you book a stay at a resort hotel or mountain lodge.
