Stop by the Higashitaisetsu Nature Center to learn about the natural environment of the Higashitaisetsu region and hiking trail conditions.

Learn about the wildlife of the Higashitaisetusu area through picture panels that explain the region's rich biodiversity. Aquariums house freshwater fish and aquatic insects, and there are taxidermy mounts of animals such as the brown bear and Steller's sea eagle. Realistic models of extinct animals such as the Hokkaido wolf and the Japanese river otter are on display. The insect collection has over 5,000 types of insect specimens from the Higashitaisetsu region and around the world.

The nature center offers visitors a closer look at the history and culture of early humans in Japan and Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan. Artifacts from the Paleolithic era (around 2,000 years ago) are on display, such as tools made from obsidian and shoes and bowls made from plant material. Articles used by the Ainu give visitors a closer look at their traditional lifestyle.

Obtain guidance on walking trails and hiking routes on Mount Nipesotsu and Mount Ishikari at the information counter. You can see warnings about bear sightings, and get information about tourist attractions such as hot springs, local products, and recommended scenic viewpoints.
