A base for exploring Daisetsuzan National Park and hiking Mount Kurodake
Learn about Daisetuszan National Park's wildlife and geography through videos, a 3D topographical diorama of the park, and taxidermy mounts of Hokkaido wildlife at the Sounkyo Visitor Center.
The visitor center is the perfect place to plan hiking routes, with staff on hand to offer advice on tackling the more advanced trails on Mount Kurodake. Digital tablets with trail information in multiple languages are available to rent free of charge. Maps display four recommended nature trails where you can observe the park's natural surroundings. Seasonal information posted on the maps show where you can find the best spots to see fall foliage or blooming flowers in the spring along the trails.
There is a lounge space and a craft corner at the center where you can create a memento of your trip. The eco-friendly visitor center uses natural light and solar power to reduce carbon emissions as part of Daisetsuzan National Park's conservation efforts.
The Sounkyo Visitor Center is situated next to the Kurodake Ropeway (cable car). You can reach the Fifth Station of Mount Kurodake by taking the ropeway.
