A base for birdwatching and hiking in Hakone

The Hakone Visitor Center is a base for birdwatchers and hikers in the Hakone area of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

Birdwatchers can enjoy the 3-kilometer wheelchair-accessible walkway starting at the visitor center, where over 110 bird species have been identified. Binoculars are available to borrow free of charge.

Three hiking routes begin at the visitor center: the Sengokuhara Highland Trail (6 hours round-trip), the Mount Kintoki Trail (3–4 hours round-trip), and the Lake Ashinoko Trail (6 hours round-trip).

Inside the visitor center, there are exhibits with Japanese and English explanations on the Hakone area's plants, insects, and animals. A topographical diorama identifies the names of mountain peaks, and there are mounted specimens of local insects and butterflies. Listen to recordings of bird sounds and study the map showing where certain bird species can be observed. You can watch three short videos about Hakone's natural beauty and how the area has changed over time.

The visitor center also hosts a wide range of educational events for a small fee, such as guided hiking courses tailored to your experience level, craft workshops, nature observation events and nature classes for children.

The lounge area has large glass windows that offer a scenic view of Lake Ashinoko.
