Learn about the conservation of wildlife on Iriomote Island

Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center functions as a base to educate visitors on the wildlife of Iriomotejima Island and the conservation efforts being made to protect the different species.

The center primarily focuses on the conservation of the Iriomote cat, a critically endangered subspecies of leopard cat found exclusively on the island. The center has played an important role in implementing measures to mitigate the species' further decline.

At the center, which underwent a renovation in 2022, visitors can learn about the ecology of the island's wildlife and the conservation measures in place to protect the Iriomote cat and many other species. The displays and exhibits are engaging and appeal to the five senses. They include a driving simulator in which you can practice wildlife-friendly driving and tactile exhibits where you can touch the fur of the Iriomote cat and even check the scent of its urine. One of the most eye-catching exhibits is a large mural depicting the environments of the island and the more than 700 species of flora and fauna they support. Viewing this, you can see how the nature of the island is interconnected.
