Taketomijima Visitor Center (Taketomi Yugafukan)

A center for connecting with the unique nature and culture of Taketomijima Island

Taketomijima Visitor Center (Taketomi Yugafukan) introduces visitors to nature, traditional culture and performing arts on the island. Yugafu means "world fortune" in Japanese and "the divine blessing of a good harvest" in the Okinawan dialect. The building offers a space for exchange between Taketomijima's inhabitants and visitors, and staff provide the most up-to-date information about cultural events and sightseeing on Taketomijima.

Inside the visitor center, you will find three large maps of nearby terrain detailing recommended trails and where you can see local wildlife. The center has cultural exhibits on various topics, such as the concept of utsugumi (mutual cooperation) and the practice of nature worship. There is an audio exhibit where you can listen to local folk songs and tales, and a collection of picture books that explain stories and words from the Taketomijima dialect. One video explains rules to follow to preserve the island's natural beauty, and another documents cultural rituals and ceremonies. Visitors can drink herbal tea and read books from the center's library in the relaxation space.

For further exploration of the island, take the Taketomijima Island Natural Education Walking Path that begins from the visitor center. The 6-kilometer hiking route makes a loop through the island's villages and along the coastline.
