An introduction to the mountains of Joshin'etsukogen National Park
The hot spring resort of Manza Onsen is located at around 1,800 meters above sea level, near the peaks of Mount Moto-Shirane and Mount Kusatsu-Shirane in Joshin'etsukogen National Park.
The Manza Nature Center has displays on the region's dramatic landscapes, varied wildlife and fascinating history. The area lies within the volcanically active Joshin massif and is dotted with geothermal springs, and plumes of volcanic gas billowing from fumaroles on the mountainside can be seen from the visitor center's deck. Inside the center, there are informative maps and photos, a 3D topographical map of the area, samples of plants and flowers, and displays of animal skins, with explanatory text in Japanese and English.
The Manza Nature Center is the perfect place to learn more about Manza Onsen and to pick up information on hiking routes and trail conditions before heading out into the area’s mountains. Staff can give you up-to-date information on volcanic activity, weather, bear sightings and more. Staff can also suggest routes and advise on local activities and tour operators.
Facilities include an information desk, an outdoor observation deck, and an indoor seating area with an open fire—a warm and welcoming spot in winter. The nature center is next to Manza Onsen’s bus terminal, with connections to Karuizawa.
