A wealth of information on the natural beauty of the Okunikko region
The Nikko Yumoto Visitor Center is located in the Okunikko region of Nikko National Park. The area includes the wetlands of Okunikko Shitsugen, designated a Ramsar site, Nikko Yumoto Onsen, Lake Yunoko and Yudaki Falls. The center offers a range of information on the area's forests, rivers, lakes, and wetlands, including important alerts on trail conditions, bear sightings, heavy snow, and closed paths. You can also learn about recommended seasonal sightseeing spots where you can observe colorful fall foliage or flowers in bloom.
Explore exhibits that introduce Okunikko's ecology, with a topographical diorama of the area, including the names of the region's mountain peaks and displays of plant and animal specimens. Photographs of Okunikko in different seasons give you a better idea of when certain areas can best be explored. Take a break outside on the open deck.
The visitor center offers guided birdwatching, animal tracking, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing tours. It occasionally holds exhibits on topics such as mitigating the damaging impact of feeding deer, the history of Okunikko, and regional hot spring culture. You can find English information about recommended hiking courses on the visitor center's official website, including routes around Mount Nikko-Shirane, Lake Yunoko, and the Senjogahara Marshland.
