Learn about Hokkaido wildlife through life-like displays and augmented reality
The Shiretoko World Heritage Conservation Center plays a vital role in improving the quality of life of the animals and plants of Shiretoko. Visit the center to gain a deeper understanding of the natural environment of Shiretoko and the rules you will need to observe in order to protect the environment while visiting.
The near life-size exhibits of animal photographs and models, and of animal remnants, such as brown bear claws, are a highlight. Follow the animal footprints on the floor to learn about Shiretoko inhabitants, such as brown bears, foxes, and Ezo deer. Tablets in various languages use augmented reality to bring the local animals to life and interact with users based on their movements.
You can view a short film that introduces the natural environment of Shiretoko and regulations for protecting its relatively untouched beauty. The center also provides the latest information on highlights of this UNESCO World Heritage site, boat trip schedules, and real-time data on nature in the area. You can also attend lectures on Shiretoko's importance as a World Heritage site.
The Utoro Shirietoku Roadside Station (michi-no-eki) next to the center, alongside National Route 334, is a great place to take a break. It houses a small souvenir shop, a fish market, a food takeout corner, and a fresh seafood restaurant.
