A base for exploring Shiretoko's coast by land or sea

The Shiretoko World Heritage Rusa Field House is a hub of information for mountaineers and sea kayakers. Learn about the value of Shiretoko World Natural Heritage site's marine life, including whales and seabirds. The field house also has information on local ecological history, the protection of the natural environment and brown bear sightings. In order to reduce the risk of accidents while trekking, Rusa Field House provides vital information on shoreline, reef, and weather conditions as well as tidal fluctuations.

There are no marked trails on Cape Shiretoko and sea kayakers and experienced hikers exploring the areas around Mount Shiretoko and Cape Shiretoko should take extreme caution. Before exploring the area, visitors should attend a lecture at the Rusa Field House.

The field house is decorated in a cozy wood motif with glass walls offering views of the oceanfront. The second floor of the building has binoculars and telescopes for observing whales and dolphins, with information on which species can be seen. Photographs of local wildlife as well as thick strands of Rausu kelp, a traditional culinary ingredient, are also on display.
