Restful ocean views from Cape Shionomisaki

Shiokaze-no-Kyukeisho (Rest House at the Southernmost Point of Japan's Main Island) is a seaside rest area on Cape Shionomisaki that doubles as a lookout spot. Visitors to Yoshino-Kumano National Park can relax on the expansive lawn and enjoy the views from the peaceful observation terrace, with benches that look out over the Pacific Ocean.

The rest house has exhibits on the natural characteristics of the Cape Shionomisaki area, like local fish specimens and the Kuroshio Current. This warm ocean current contributes to the area's rich ecosystem. The rest house also features an interesting exhibit on the history of local divers who traveled over 5,000 kilometers to Thursday Island and the Arafura Sea near Australia in search of white pearls, with some of their historical diving equipment on display.
