Relax among the delicate purple blooms

During the oppressive heat of summer, this park in northeastern Gunma offers a refreshing escape. At an elevation of 1,350 meters, you can view fields of a wide variety of flowers. The park's namesake lavender is, unsurprisingly, the most impressive.

Don't miss

  • The lavender soft-serve ice cream
  • Activities for kids, including a playground area

How to Get There

There is easy train access from Tokyo and Takasaki.

Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Jomo Kogen Station.

From Jomo Kogen Station, take the dedicated shuttle bus for one hour and 15 minutes directly to Tambara Lavender Park (adults 1,030 yen, children 520 yen).

Quick Facts

During the summer, there are over 50,000 lavender flowers

In the winter season, Tambara is popular for beginner-level skiing and snowboarding

Open season: early July to late August

Peak season is July through mid August

Because the ski slope is meant for beginners, the incline is not too difficult to walk up. Alternatively, sit back and relax on a chairlift that sweeps you over the floral fields.
