Learn about History and Conservation in Hokkaido’s Mystical Forest

Take a walking tour through a serene lakeside forest in a national park

In Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, is Akan Mashu National Park, a land rich in lakes and rivers. This ecologically fascinating caldera zone is home to abundant life, including mammals such as Yezo sika deer, brown bears, and red foxes, as well as bird and insect species. This land is home to multiple volcanoes, as well as the indigenous Ainu people, with their own colorful, distinctive culture and traditions. The Hikari no Mori, or “Mythical Forest,” is located within the National Park and close to Lake Akan, which also features a hot spring.

During the guided walk through the Mystical Forest offered by Tsuruga Adventure Base Siri, you can access places in the forest which can only be entered when accompanied by a certified guide. The guide will talk about the history of Lake Akan Onsen (hot springs), as well as about conservation efforts dedicated to protecting this natural wonder. Japanese Judas trees, which are said to be over 800 years old, tower amid the plants distributed in this area. If you are lucky, you might catch sight of the diverse animals that call the forest home: owls, eagles, deer, bears, flying squirrels, sables, and red foxes.

This is a must-see activity for nature lovers or explorers. Afterwards, soak in the local hot springs or explore the indigenous Ainu culture. Everything is conveniently located near Lake Akan.

Access: From Tokyo Haneda Airport, fly to Kushiro Airport (about two hours). The Tsuruga Adventure Base meeting point is about a one-hour drive from the airport.
