Bird-Watching in Tama

Wild bird species abound in the westernmost reaches of Tokyo

The rural reaches of the Tama area, located far to the west of urbanized Tokyo, are politically part of the metropolis but feel a world away. This easily accessible area is home to many wild bird species, with many thriving in the lush nature of Okutama-Hinohara Village and around Mt. Takao in Hachioji. Head to the Tama Forest Science Garden for an especially high chance of spotting birds.

When to go: All year
